Bea Denton's installations tell stories about hope born of the fragile human condition, and our consequent pursuit of faith, however illusive. 'We live in a society whose newfound religion is self-worship and whose headline news is a celebration of public suffering and testimony'. The stories are found in the statements of individuals gathered online, by post and by word of mouth, transcribed but not altered. They become confessions etched into slabs of glass; faces pleading from heavy granite slabs, overheard voices, the whisperings of miracles. Bea Denton recieved the 2007 MacDonald Egan Award for her public art commission Via Dolorosa, a re-examination of the Stations of the Cross in the pink light of reality TV. |
