Anyway, it seems the site is owned by a company called Cathedral who, as well as developing the railway station, are set to build lots of flats, studios and 'live-work units' on the site above the old carriage ramp. This is a near unique architectural hang-on from the days of hansom cabs and horses that gave access to the station platform 10m above the road. It's wonderful. Overgrown, paint-scarred, battened up and falling down it consists of a series of brick arches that decrease in size as the ramp descends from the platform. Each arch has no doubt housed everything in its life, from horses to motor-cars, dodgy deals to air-raid shelters. They stink variously of bodily fluids and engine oil and would make a fabulous set for a film. Or indeed an art project. And it seems that Cathedral are interested in hearing proposals for the site, provided they are REALLY cool, wild and preferably extravagant. You have about, well, quite a long time in fact as they're doing up the station first - work's due to start in about a month - but the whole area behind the Catholic church will remain digger-free for the duration. Best person to speak to if you want to discuss/negotiate is Rebecca Molina of Raw Nerve (www.raw-nerve.co.uk) - she's either in the café with no name or in the office. By the way, can't seem to find that website with the competition to choose a name for the café with no name and haven't heard that I've won the fabulous racing bike - so I assume I haven't. Is there a name now? Has it got anything to do with Marlowe or not. AND… Funnily enough, that mural competition Up Against It - the wall in question is the one overlooking the site. Entries close 01 09 07. AND... There's an idea for an arts, crafts, food, collectibles market on the site - 'opening Autumn 07'. Enquiries: 020 7515 7153 chris.smith@urban-space.co.uk |
